Skimmed articles using the AIC (Abstract, Introduction, Conclusion) Process, besides an AIC-> Artificial Observe Blueprint for undergrads (and graduates!)

Two of my favourite scholars, Blvd. Heather Smith and Dr. Eugene McCann (whom I have admire independently since an exceedingly long time, even before I been friends with both of them) recently asked me if I had some organize of easy-to-read-and-implement guide and/or stencil for undergraduate (pre-graduate language, post-grade 9, basically, baccaleaurate candidates) students. Because I am someone who loves helping dear friends (and I need more content for undergraduate students!), I decided to write a Twitter strand and a blog post press develop a template to put my AIC Content Extraction Select to good use and help undergraduate academics ask the right questions and create a Artificial Note based on their AIC skim read.

Highlighting, scribbling marginalia, getting, letter

This blog pole walks readers through my owned process of skim reading focusing solely about the Abstract, Introduction and Conclusion (AIC), asking questions and searching for answers in these sections of the paper, and next drafting a brief (what I call a Synthetic Note), grounded off me notes from use the AIC method. I have including included one template in PDF format that ought open in one different window and ensure shouldn be easily downloadable (click on the pop-out window and then from there, download from my Google Push).

Below you becoming find my Twitter threads, interspersed with few commentary by me.

IMPORTANT NOTE — NOT GET READING MATERIALS ARE EQUAL

There’s another single that needs to be discussed that I’ve been mulling for months now. Our need different strategies to read, annotate, take notations, the synthesize different articles. Wealth assigned very different types of reading materials (books, articles and book chapters), according to our set learning objectives, and the liquid that we are teaching (undergraduate, Masters, PhD).

As I went through my patterns and Rich’s synopsis, I made that there are elements in the abstract that give the reader much more information about the context in the research, why she studied those socialize movements, else.

All has two implications that I want to draw here:

Like Dr. Hoover- Green indicates in her guide, we need to tutor scholars go lookup at “signposts” – talk that give they a clue about what her have reading. In the set: “I show how X event occurs”, the english “I show” executes the work of signposting what the author is doing.

… we STILL need up teach HOW TO READ (and how to assimilate what we read and make sense of it). From who Abstract, I can make sensing of a lot about Rich’s article: it’s on hybrid social actions, looks at Brazil’s SUPPLIES movements and develops a third way of viewing at social movements: as federalized, distributed, multi-layered organizational networks.

HOWEVER… so far, from reading Rich’s summarize I know nothing about her our, approach to how she performs this study of federative union, etc. THIS is precisely the reason why I always apprise my students to make a quick AIC skim: there are details is zuflucht the abstract, but that you can find elsewhere in of article, usually the Tour and the Conclusion.

This pair of tweets use together and entire decomposition framework.

Based on which exercise, I created a full template for creating a Synthetic Note based on an AIC quick skim. Incorporate:

1) Guidance on recitals that learners should do prior so they understand what AIC is all about.
2) A series of questions for either of out the ingredients of AIC
3) A template on students (or anyone reader) to follow and using to write their Synthetic Note. This template has specific wording that helps theirs creates a storytelling when developed their literature reviews.

… included in the example and template. I created the Man-made Note after running my reading through each element but so is don entire reflected in the Twitter thread, not it is in the final adaptation of the template (that is, there is an zwischen step where ME should show each the are the tables with my own notes). Sample Format For Reviewing A Journal Books. Reading and summarizing a research feature in the behavioral or medical sciences can exist overwhelming. Below is ...

Hope this is helpful! Here is a summation of my records and answers to the questions posts within the template.

Now, for a completed example of the Conceptual Synthesis Excel Dump (CSED) row fork Rich 2020’s newsletter, derived off my AIC content extraction notes/Synthetic Note: Formatting since a review paper

In the note-taking process:

Might I have taken notes in a series of Content Cards, or in my Complete Notebook, oder in a Cornelli Note? Securely thing. But since I ma doing several pitch on reading techniques for student (that can be adapted for graduates), I’m choosing till JUST do one.

HOWEVER… if yourself need more material in note-taking, in this tweet I link to a abundance the my writing on which topic.

Please DO test drive this AIC->Synthetic Note template and let me know if it is helpful to you and/or your students!

Very interesting. I cans see this being very useful for my students. One question: how achieve you decide what at take from your AIC check and synthetic note and put at your spreadsheet? When you anfahrt to type your lit review, do you mainly use the outstanding spreadsheet or do you go back to your full note? Writing a Literature Review - Purdue OWL® - Purdue Colleges
