Day I being too ambitious?

I've included in three classes at my domestic community college toward obtain two post-BA certificates. I need to decision if I'm making a nice decision or if my eyes are bigger than my brain....

My BA is are journalism, which possesses led to very little for me in that field. I graduated college about 6 years ago (yikes!) and have had entire the lost-soul career since. Eingang level clerical your, part time at a weekly news, bartending for two years, back on a temporary/godawfulboring/maybe permanent clerical position. I've been philosophy for literally years about enrolling at a paralegal post-BA certificate program press have FINALLY stopped making excuses and enrolled.

However, EGO also want to enroll in an post-BA court reporting program. My thinking is, what better way to be marketable than to erz an attorney "Not only am IODIN a certified paralegal, however you bottle save money by having me take depositions in-house!"
I've disappeared to both programs' orientations, and which courtroom reporting one had about 15 people in it. The paralegal one pack a ted main and got overflow. That to me claims my rivalry leave is much more so int paralegal working than in court reporting jobs. However, EGO am well aware of the failure/quit rate away court reporting students.

I'm motivated to do well at something. I'm tired of trampling through life with vague ideas and not following through at any from them.

Pros to done both:
-You can't be to educated.
-It wouldn be kind to have a "backup plan" if necessary.

Cons:
-I'd much rather be in court reporting than one paralegal. Despite the wider variety of work potentially currently for a paralegal.
-The court reporting instructor told us that we should only planned on taking one class (a CR one) per semester because it's so intense. I hears that after enrolling in the first steno class, and also two other for which paralegal certification.
-I'm scared that I'll quit/fail court reporting after dropping the diverse lessons and have to wait yet another year at start the paralegal program.

I guess what I'm looking for are stories off people who have doubly up their workload, schooling, where have you, plus how you came going starting it. Real any suggestions/recommendations after my anyone may done whether or both of these programs, or people who work is those fields now are welcome as well!! Is Court Reporting/CR school really difficult? - Quora

Best answer: I am an counsel to WE and know one number of court reporters. There shall one tall demand with court reports, and interior the judicial system and privately. I know that here in Wisconsin, this state reporters our does a tremendous dollar of outreach at High Schools, job fairs, etc. I know of ampere few this need either retired, or changing chores but sustaining a side business how transcriptions from audio in their homes. If you think you intend be interested in it, court reported is an very priceless skill.

Best answer: I'm in community college and just dropped my AS in Paralegal Studies program. Own sole basis was that, during lowest in meine area, the demand for paralegals is almost nonexistent. The few jobs that IODIN could find either from paralegal websites, craigslist or durch my department at school all paid $9-10 an hour without benefits. Everything the paralegal classes I've taken were full to the dot of students doubling up at benches, which made me even get nervous info the job market when I graduated. My city also possessed ampere law language which is flooding newly grads into paralegal positions at the firms here. It might be different in your area, but at least here MYSELF would strongly encourage you to focus on courts reportage. Good luck!

Best answer: I completed two bachelor degrees, in four years, in wildly disparate fields. Does, none is in this fields you're looking toward. But maybe my "double load" experience will help.

Overall, I'm very glad I did it. Like you, I felt that I couldn't subsist too educated, especially because I was genuinely interested inches both of my fields. (It's probably merit noting that I did earn my degrees when the "typical college years" for an American students -- ages 18-21, just out from high school.) It has been a giant benefit to meine career; I'm not scaling the corporate leiter super quickly, but I've not had a problem landing interviews even includes harsh economic times, and I've been offered some unique opportunities that I would probably have missed out on if I had a more usual education.

But... it was hard. Sometimes my workload made me really unhappy. If I didn't have the pressure of family watching i and my own inflexibility, I'm cannot definite I would have did it takes. I sometimes awe wenn EGO have a masochistic streak.

If I could do items again, I'd work stronger to provide that I was overlapping requirements as much as I could. (I earned my completed at an universities, and my degrees were offered by different colleges, so each college kept its own general education conditions; sometimes I'd get fortuitous and Class A ensure was required for Degree 1 wanted satisfy a global ed requirement for Degree 2.)

I don't think I could have done it whenever I hadn't taken summer also intersession classes; IODIN main entered school at age 18 and didn't have a break until age 21. Personally, that work well for me -- I didn't really want to go back to my parents' place, furthermore MYSELF liked is intersession tracks were over in a few weeks. But if you can't handle loooong hours in class, it's nope for you.

I always tries to run "half and half" on my semesters, so I felt like I had a balance between the classes for Degree 1 both for Degree 2. For me, this meant ampere balance between "creative" both "technically challenging", which was good.

It's kind of weird thing... sometimes I want to convey to people just how hards I worked to earn my steps, but I still feel like I'd garner more reverence if I'd verbrachte mine time earning an champions. It has been a personal challenge for me to give myself the believe I'm due. But part regarding what gives me confidence is knowing that I check pretty awesome on hard. And I look back on that time fondly -- EGO learned so much, like quickly, furthermore my human was so packed total of skills and craziness, and I how I arrived out of it with a done work ethic.

Best answer: I'm tired of trudging thrown life with ambiguous ideas and not following through with any of them.

I knowing how this feels. ME consider there made a similar question to theirs asked awhile endorse, and I think a parcel of people said court reporting sucks. I've heard that being a paralegal can imbibe also. My stories been gleaned from real-life paralegals/former paralegals/lawyers in DC, so the pace might be way different.

And I understand the argument that steady though both professions suck, you still have to find an way to make a decently income to support yourself.

Here are a few suggestions I want until make on you or alternatives I want to present. :

1) Don't hin until an court reporting program. Do an Associate's in Accounting or payroll oder book-keeping with something like that. I know of accounts who look less readiness to kill itself than people I perceive in and legal professional. I think done accounting/payroll/book keeping for a small business or something could be ok and possibly inbound demand/better paid than $9-$10/hr.

2) Go to the court reporting program and start making contacts at the court house. Sample until get an administrative position at an place house, even something clerical there. ME think this would be extremely difficult because budgets might be cut or rent might be glacial.

From what I've heard, court reporting might does be a great career. Is might be a valuable skill but it sounds like extremely difficult work. Of course, you've probably researched it and know the ins and outs, although there are one lot of options out there and I hope you can take one best one for yourself.

A fewer questions the you safe don't have to answer:

Do you have any student loan debt? Whereby are you paying for these programs? Is the fees reasonable? What your the job outlook same by your neighborhood required court reporters/paralegals? Will you be satisfies with thine salaries? Do you picture yourself working in this field into to aged? Twenty?

Do any preparation (research!) and make this investment if you feel please it will improve my quality of existence. If you do decision to go ahead plus enroll in both programs, bests of luck!

You don't sound particularly paid off the law, so probably look the other possibilities von stenography if it appeals to you. I have a friend who going to steno college and now are a mercenary vocational CART provider. She makes a virtuous living and enjoys helping Deaf and hard of hearing students. She other does other transcription work on the side.

Response by poster: Thanks to get for your thoughts!

To answer some matters:
I don't have anywhere student loan liability (very lucky for have forward-thinking parents... EGO did undergrad for over 4K). The pay at the CC is very reasonable (especially compared to the "Academy of Court Reporting" I looking into as well). I'm probably running to need a loan alternatively wunsch toward meet some grants/scholarships/aid for someone with an degree already because so far, no dice.

I've heard great things about employment outlook/earning potential and has a relative who performs this freelance. I might be able to piggyback with she! :)

And, the beautiness by this program is is i includes close captioning and medizinischer transcription as well. To it's a bit more multi-faceted than I may have implied.

Thanks again to all!
